I formed a lifelong passion for horses at the age of five when I first convinced my parents to let me take riding lessons. I have been riding and training horses in a variety of disciplines ever since. I often like to combine my two passions, writing and horses, which is why a lot of my writing projects have a horse angle to them.
I started writing in my teens while I was completely obsessed with horses. So, many of my stories tended to revolve around horses.
In my first creative writing course in college, I wrote and later published the short story Jumping Thoughts. I was hooked, but as with many creative pursuits it has taken many years of work to improve my craft and learn. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts: Creative Writing from Charter Oak State College. I’ve continued learning on my own and through organized courses including the Institute of Children’s Literature, Long Ridge Writers Group, and the University of California, Los Angeles—Extension Screenwriter’s Certification Program. I learned the art of magazine writing from both ICL and LRWG and had many articles that I worked on in the courses and after published in various horse magazines. I continue to work on earning my Feature Film Screenwriting Certificate from UCLA and have enjoyed the wonderful teachers I have studied under in their courses.
I wrote and self-published the first edition of Horse Schools in 2002. I learned a lot about marketing and self-promotion during this period of time. When it was time to update for the second edition I queried several horse publishers and Trafalgar Square Books loved the idea of the book so much that they picked it up for the second and third edition. I wrote and finished my first novel in 2004 while participating in NaNoWriMo. I had started novels before this, but this was the first time that I actually saw an idea through. For that reason alone, I am eternally grateful to this wonderful event and highly recommend it to anyone that has had a hard time finishing books.
Right now much of my writing time is devoted to novels and screenplays. Though I continue to write on the subject of equine education and careers through Horse Schools, my blog, and other freelance articles on the subject. And I have some exciting news about Horse Schools that I will be announcing soon.
I travel nationwide to various horse expos giving my seminars on equine education and careers. Please check my events page for where I’ll be in 2010. Most of my time for 2009 has been spent working on exciting new projects that I will announce when they are close to completion.
I belong to the wonderful Romance Writers of America and several RWA chapters including RWA Online, Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal, and Sacramento Valley Rose.
